It was already dark out when the crowds filled the Tiger Stadium, on the night of October 18th. Clouds rolled in, blanketing the team in flurries of mist, and by 7:00 everyone and their mom was soaked to the bone. Suffice to say, it wasn’t the most pleasant game to be at, but with it being the homecoming game, and a hopeful winning score at the end, it was a much anticipated show. Within the first half of the game, the Tiger’s football team had won 26 points in our favor, with our opposing team, the South Whidbey Falcons, having a score of exactly zero.
With the jacket clad cheerleaders trying to lead the soggy student section, dripping in red, white, and blue, the second quarter ran out and half-time hit. The first of the events of the halftime show were of the cheerleaders, performing a new routine, ending with all of them dabbing at the conclusion. Having finally pepped up the crowd, they exited the field to make room for the band. The marching band and colorguard performed in unity, making a very intricate performance oozing with drama, including having a player climb a ladder while playing!
Then came the moment we were all waiting for: the announcement of the Homecoming King and Queen, following the various Princes and Princesses of the underclassmen. Freshmen’s royalty being Karson Ross and Caleigh Rice, leading out the Sophomore class’s Fabian Villafane and Ryan Thelen, and wrapping up the call for royalty was Blair Johnson and Gino Howard from the Junior class. Afterwards all the prospective seniors filled out, starting with Leyla Munoz and Leo Mauya, then Isabelle Frye and Ben Rojas, and finally Evelynn Fuller and Jeremiah Umanzor. In the end Evie and Jeremiah won, to the great applause of the crowd.
After the royalty ordeal, the football game resumed, and many parents abandoned the game in search of a shelter. In the end, the Tigers gained 10 more points against the Falcons, ending the game with a score of 36-0. As the team went down the line receiving congratulations, the crowd exited the slick stands, waiting for the cars to clear out. We were all happy to win on Homecoming night, but it was even better to get out of the rain.
