Black and Blue Bowl
It was a stereotypical rainy Washington day on the night of this year’s legendary Black and Blue Bowl. The yearly battle between us, the Granite Falls Tigers against the Sultan Turks. With the trophy on the line from previous years, there were a lot of expectations, especially from getting the win last year. It didn’t matter that Sultan is an hour away, it didn’t stop the Granite student section from showing up on Turks turf and completely filling our selected area, bottom to top. After all, the charter bus lugged many students, not to mention all of the Granite carpools filling up the parking lot.
Slow to start at first, it was a fairly even match. It was a scary game, both sides being neck to neck in the only 13-6 point game. That coming Monday, Mr. Neuman would be losing a lot in candy bets. It was a roller coaster of emotions in the student section, screaming for our team, trying to out cheer Sultan, and getting yelled at by little kids from Sultan making some unkind gestures, who promptly got a talking-to from a teacher in the crowd; it was wild. Nonetheless, the cheerleaders kept our spirits up in a collaborative halftime show with the Sultan cheer team.
The Tigers of course got the win in the end, ending the game to the tune of the ‘I believe that we will win’ chant. Followed by a flurry of photos and congratulations, the football team filed off the field to the buses home. Back to the carpools the Tiger fans went, filled with glory and bragging rights for the next year. All in all, it was a long, and happy night.
