This past Friday marked the night all football fans were waiting for this past season. Not only was it Homecoming, but it was also the game that would determine who would win the conference championship. Adding to the excitement was that it was also Senior Night, in which 40 seniors ended up getting honored between football, band, and cheer. It was also Halloween (though that’s not important to the game) and the crowd was decked out in full Tiger garb and their costumes ready to cheer on their team.
Although the football team has been doing well this year, with a record of seven wins and only one loss this season, going up against King’s High would shake any team’s confidence. In the weeks leading up to this challenge, the coaches had been doing their homework. King’s had lost one of their starting players, and ever since, they had not been living up to their usual hype. Our players were confident they could pull through, especially since their victory against Cedar Park Christian School, which the King’s team had previously lost to.
As for Friday itself, the first half of the game looked frightening, with Kings already scoring two touchdowns. However, right before the halftime show began, the Tigers managed to make a comeback and score one of our own touchdowns before the time ran out. Then, out came the band with their award-winning performance followed by the Homecoming royalty show. Congratulations to Alianna Simons and Keegan Graafstra for being crowned Homecoming Queen and King, and to the rest of the Homecoming court.
However, the real highlight of the game happened during the fourth quarter: the score was at 20-14 and the King’s team was quickly gaining ground. Their quarterback had thrown the ball, and they would have ended up scoring and taking the win if it weren’t for Gino Howard. The interception was a happy surprise and saved the game for the Tigers. It was an emotional end for the football team as they walked back to the stadium, and as the crowd cheered, it made everyone proud to be from Granite.
