This is by far one of my favorite book series. Sarah J. Maas does an amazing job of creating unique characters in her books. She is also great at making heartbreaking cliffhangers. In this review, I’ll say my favorite aspects of the book, and what I feel could be written differently. But first, I’ll summarize it, and dive in on the pros and cons.
A girl named Celaena Sardothien was locked away in a salt mine called Endovier. She got out, but only because the king wanted her to be put in a competition to be the King’s Champion, which would mean she would have to do his dirty work. Something about Celaena though, is that she’s Adarlan’s most notorious assassin. She does challenges in the competition, but some shady stuff started happening. She helps everyone by figuring out what, or who, is causing it to happen.
Now to get to the fun part: the best parts of this amazing and beautifully written book. My favorite part is when Celaena and her friend start talking in a different language, and are talking about people in front of them without the person realizing it. Another good part of the story is when Celaena is with her dog Fleetfoot. It’s so heartwarming to read about how much she loves her pet.
My favorite character in this book is by far the main one, Celaena. She went through terrible things, things that no 18-year-old should, but that taught her to not take crap from anyone! She stands up for herself and always has a witty comeback to any comment. In fact, she gives the crown prince a run for his money in that department. Now, to my least favorite part about this review…what I didn’t like about the book and who my least favorite characters are.
I didn’t think this would be so hard! I genuinely don’t believe that there was something I didn’t enjoy. This book was so well written and thoroughly thought out. In most books, if you pay close enough attention, you can see inconsistencies. However, I don’t think there are any with this one. But there are characters that I dislike, not because they’re poorly written, but because they’re miserable.
The character that I hate the most in this book is the King of Adarlan. He doesn’t care about anything except for himself and will even play dirty in the competition he created! A big reason why I don’t like him though is how he treats everyone, especially his son and Celaena. He acts like they are the dirt beneath his shoe. Another character that I don’t like is Duke Perrington. He plays a big role in the book series in the long run. I don’t know how to fully describe why I don’t like him. For one, he pressured another character, Kaltain, to do something she didn’t want to. He’s also the King’s right-hand man and is just vile.
Well, this is the end of the review. I hope that you’ll give the book a chance! It really is as amazing as I’m saying it is.
